Scripting

This board is for help with scripts and gamemodes: something does not work, you don't know how to build something, or you have a question about the API. To show off finished gamemodes, use Gamemodes.

1. Before you ask

• Read the scripting guide and the API reference. Many answers are already there.
• Search the forum (top right). Someone may have had the same problem.
• Check the server console and log. The error message often says exactly what is wrong.

2. A good question

• One problem per thread, with a title that says what it is about: "Zone event fires twice when entering", not "Help!!!" or "Script broken".
• Say what you want to do, what you expected and what happens instead.
• Say what you already tried.
• Add the Open Road MP server version, and which gamemode you build on if it is not your own.

3. Code and errors

• Post code as text in a code block (the Code button in the editor), never as a screenshot or photo.
• Cut it down to the part that shows the problem. Nobody reads 500 lines, but a small example that others can run gets answered fast.
• Post the full error message from the console or log, not just "it crashes".
• Larger projects can be attached as files. No executables.

4. Keep secrets out

• Never post your master_key, passwords, tokens, API keys or database login data. Remove them from code and configs before posting.
• Leaked a key? Delete it right away under Account → Server keys and create a new one.

5. When it is solved

• Set the prefix to Solved and post what fixed it, so the next person with the same problem finds the answer.
• Don't delete your question once it is answered.

6. Answering

• Help with explanations, not just finished code. The aim is that the person understands the fix.
• Not sure? Say so instead of guessing.
• Stay friendly. Everyone started somewhere, and nobody here is paid to help.

7. Not allowed

• Help with cheats, exploits, or getting around sign-in, server keys or bans.
• Scripts that collect players' personal data without telling them.
• Demands like "write me a whole gamemode". Clearly described requests are fine, as long as you take part yourself.
• Bumping your own thread within 24 hours, or posting the same question in several boards.
